The Challenge

Block Party 2025

Prairie Point Block Party 2025 began in September 2024. This program runs for 12 months, until August 2025.

This year’s theme leans into the idea that we all need a little push, or CHALLENGE to improve our quilting skills. Each month will focus on a particular skill, and we’ll get progressively more CHALLENGED as the year goes on. Join us for this new Challenge.

(But don’t worry! Our friendly staff are here to help if you get stumped!)

What is Block Party?

Block Party is a mystery block-of-the-month program designed in-house. Unlike our other BOM programs, Block Party offers you an incentive to keep on track.

On the 2nd Monday or 2nd Saturday of each month, come in and pick up your kit for the next month’s block. If you, personally, bring your finished block from last month, you’ll receive the next kit for a discounted price of $4.50, instead of the regular $7.00 price. If, for any reason, you cannot come on Block Party Day or do not have your finished block with you, the block kit will cost the full $7.00.

Again, to get the special price of $4.50 on kits:

  • Come to the shop on Block Party Day (the second Saturday or the second Monday)

  • Come yourself - your friend, spouse, or random stranger cannot get a discount on your block

  • Have the block from the month before completed AND with you

  • Only one kit each month qualifies for the $4.50 price

A mail-order option is available for out-of-towners.  Call the shop for details: (913) 268-3333.

Each month, we will post pictures of the finished block online in each of our two featured colorways offered. At the end of the program, you’ll also have the option to purchase a finishing kit for the quilt, which will be approximately throw/twin-sized. The pictures and descriptions of the finished quilts will be shown a couple of months before we finish for your consideration, and you may sign up for the finishing kit at that time.

Please join us — it’s a lot of fun!

Block Party 2025 signups open on August 10 and close on September 30th, 2024.

Additionally, to help with any CHALLENGES or questions you run into this year, we have created a private Prairie Point Block Party Facebook Group for those who have signed up! Join us to get your questions answered, help others out, and post pictures of your progress.

Click the blue box to join the group! Make sure you answer the membership questions to be admitted to the group.

Don’t worry, if you don’t use Facebook, we understand. We will also have an email list to keep you updated!

Option #1:

Black Tie

Who rises to a CHALLENGE better than 007? This colorway will focus on formal blacks and whites, which we’ll soften with shades of grey. By the end of the year, you will have a sophisticated quilt full of new ways to approach block-making!

Option #2:

Flora

Have you always wondered how to use those bright, funky, floral fabrics? This might be the CHALLENGE for you! This colorway will feature Kaffe fabrics as the main focus—and we have found the perfect coordinating fabrics to tie it all together, creating a fun quilt sure to brighten any space.

Finishing Kit Info

Can you believe Block Party is almost done?! It’s time to start thinking about the finishing kits! Here’s what you need to know:

For the Flora quilt, there will be four colorway options: red/orange, blue, green, or purple. Within each of these four colorways, the outer border fabric you receive will be one of a few different Kaffe Fassett prints we’ve selected. You will not have the option to choose your outer border fabric, only the colorway, so which outer border fabric you receive will be a surprise!

Here’s an example of the variations that you may receive in the red/orange colorway:

For the Black Tie quilt, there is only one colorway.

Regardless of colorway options, the finishing kits will cost $79 and the quilts will finish at approximately 68” x 88” (roughly twin-sized). The finishing kits will include all the fabric you need for the Irish chain blocks, inner border, outer border, and binding. If you purchase a finishing kit, you’ll also receive a 15% off coupon to use on 108” wide backings to complete your quilt.

The finishing kits will be available for pickup at the August Block Party dates, August 9 and 11. We’ll also have sneak peeks in August for the new Block Party 2026 theme, so don’t miss that!

June (Month 10)

Here are the cutting charts for this month’s blocks! This month’s challenge is “8ths and Eights”: you’ll be making a few eighth-measurement cuts and the eight-at-a-time half square triangles method. Measure twice, cut once - and we HIGHLY recommend starch this month!

May (mONTH 9)

Here are the cutting charts for this month’s Block Party blocks!

This month's challenge is the Half-Rectangle Triangle, we've got some hints and tricks for using different rulers to trim these! We recommend testing your skills with some scrap fabric until you get the hang of it.

The first option, as always, is your standard ruler - our favorite is the Creative Grids 6 1/2" for this. Scroll down to the March block for a visual when we did these before. Liz took and posted the pictures, so you get her left-handed version for visuals!

These instructions from Shannon Taylor Designs are also great for using a regular ruler!

Or just check out this great video from Blue Bear Quilts, it offers two ways to trim, our directions are for the first method he demonstrates.

The second method we like is the Creative Grids Half Rectangle Trim tools.

Keegan and Joni used the Bloc-Loc ruler, these are great too.

APRIL (mONTH 8)

April’s block is called “Flying Star”. You will find this one fairly easy. Just remember to mind the 1/4 inch seam allowance so you don’t lose your star points! No special rulers needed for this month.

March (Month 7)

We recommend testing your skills with some scrap fabric until you get the hang of it. We will be re-visiting this technique in a future month, so you'll get more practice later!
